ABOUT ME

SHAWNA BUMGARDNER, MA, LPC, NCC, ALPS, ICEEFT Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, Master Accelerated Resolution Therapist

WELCOME TO MY PAGE

I am a native of Huntington, WV, married with four children, two Golden Doodles, and owner and Therapist of Healing Steps Counseling, LLC, located in Huntington, WV. I received a Master's Degree in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in 2020 after spending years in ministry working with abused and neglected children in Huntington and the surrounding areas.

I was instrumental in partnering with the Huntington City Mission, the local homeless shelter in Huntington, WV, to develop its first-ever Mental Health Initiative, and I am the founding therapist of Anchor of Hope. The program is grant-funded and offers psycho-education, preventive mental health, expressive arts, trauma-informed yoga, healthy living, and career counseling for its residents. I have received the highest level of training and certification in Accelerated Resolution Therapy, a specific trauma therapy for helping clients who suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and OCD. Additionally, I am a certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, utilizing this approach in my work with Individuals, couples, and families. My newest approach is Somatic Experiencing, in which I am learning how to help my clients understand trauma in their bodies. In my free time, I have enjoyed spending time with my Husband since 1999, our two Golden Doodles, and our beautiful daughters.

Shawna’s Therapy Dogs

I firmly believe that animals can help us connect with our most vulnerable parts and offer companionship. Meet Millie and Maple, my family’s therapy dogs and best friends.

WELCOME TO MY PAGE

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor living in Huntington, WV, with my supportive wife and our son. I am deeply passionate about helping others navigate the challenges and growth that come with the human experience. I believe each person has a unique purpose, and it is an honor to walk alongside individuals on their journey toward healing, recovery, and personal growth.

I grew up in the Tri-State area and currently live between Chesapeake and Huntington. After high school, I attended Berea College in Kentucky, where I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology with a strong emphasis on research and neurobiology. I later completed my graduate studies in clinical counseling at Lindsey Wilson University, earning a Master of Education in Counseling. I also serve as an adjunct instructor for Lindsey Wilson University, teaching courses in research methods, human growth and development, and counseling theory, which allows me to stay engaged with current evidence-based practices in the field.

Throughout my career, I have worked with a diverse range of individuals. Much of my early professional experience involved working with children and adolescents who had experienced significant trauma. I helped develop one of the first abuse-reactive residential programs in West Virginia for children diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder and also worked with adolescents in residential treatment who had experienced trauma and were involved in the juvenile justice system. These experiences sparked my interest in forensic counseling and led to my membership in the National Association of Forensic Counselors. In my free time, I love to be outdoors, and I especially enjoy fly fishing, playing guitar, Indy Car racing, and hockey.
